Seaton Delaval defeated Carlisle City 2-0 at Wheatridge Park in their return to action in the Northern Alliance Premier Division.
An improving Delaval made it three wins on the trot with goals in each half supplied by Stephen Anderson and Michael Fenwick.
Fifth-placed Carlisle City had an opportunity to overtake Killingworth Sporting and Heaton Stannington but they missed their chance with a third consecutive defeat away from home.
Seaton Delaval FC have been named as one of the latest community clubs to receive a sports grant from the Cash 4 Clubs scheme.
They were selected from more than 1,000 applications and were awarded £500 of funding.
Choosing the winners was left to a panel which included Dame Kelly Holmes, Olympic gold medallist and British record holder in athletics, Paralympic gold medallist Giles Long MBE and Richard Caborn MP and ambassador for the 2018 World Cup bid.
Second-placed Walker Central suffered only their second defeat away from home in the Northern Alliance, losing 3-2 against Seaton Delaval (pictured in blue- photo by Steve Miller).
Two early strikes by Mark Fenwick and Stephen Anderson put Delaval in charge, but they allowed Liam Mulligan and David Dormand to hit back for the Central before the break.
In the 74th minute Jordan Fry netted to restore the home side's lead.
After suffering six league defeats in a row in the Northern Alliance Premier Division, Seaton Delaval were desperate for a positive result to pull them clear of the relegation zone.
They moved up to fourth from bottom when an improved performance earned them a 2-1 victory at Blyth Town.
Blyth had been enjoying a five-match unbeaten run prior to Delaval's visit and looked likely to extend it when Danny Beresford found the target.
However, a Stephen Howes leveller soon restored Delaval's confidence and their winner was put away by Stephen Anderson just before the interval.
In two first-round ties in the Kicks Leisure Challenge Cup, Seaton Delaval and Shankhouse made progress.
Seaton Delaval avenged an earlier league defeat by winning 2-0 in their Challenge Cup tie at Killingworth Sporting thanks to goals in each half by Stephen Howes and Paul Baird.
Shankhouse needed extra time to beat cup visitors Cramlington Town 3-1.

Footballing youngsters are backing the National Trust's campaign to save Seaton Delaval Hall.
Seaton Delaval Dynamos, one of Northumberland's newest junior football teams, held a sponsored penalty shootout to raise money for the charity's appeal.

The club was set up in May by Rob and Anna Milburn from Seaton Delaval and, with the help of Neil Foster, they have recently been awarded FA Charter Standard status.
Losing six games in succession has dumped Seaton Delaval into the basement of the Northern Alliance, but Nick Gray's side was unlucky to lose 2-1 against league leaders Wark at Wheatridge Park.
Wark increased their lead at the top to six points, but found it heavy going after Tony Lancaster fired them into a 40th-minute lead.
After 74 minutes Stephen Howes struck to put Delaval back on terms and they hit the woodwork twice as they put their highly-rated visitors under pressure.
The near-misses proved costly, however, and Wark snatched victory with a telling strike by Mark Campbell in the dying seconds.
Seaton Delaval's barren spell in the Northern Alliance Premier Division continued at the weekend when they played away at fellow Northumbrians Ponteland United.
There have been four drawn games in Ponteland's eight-match unbeaten run and another looked likely after 80 goalless minutes against visitors.
The match was evenly balanced in the first half with few clear-cut chances, although Craig Johnson went close for the visitors and Glenn Ford for the hosts saw his downward header well saved by Delaval goalkeeper Frazer Nairn.
Killingworth Sporting are continuing to threaten on the fringes of the Northern Alliance title race, and they sharpened up their challenge by beating Seaton Delaval 3-2 at Wheatridge Park.
Goals for Stephen Ardley and Michael Fenwick midway through the first half gave Delaval a clear lead, but Killy's Francesco Di Pietro and Kevin Westphal hit back just before the break.
After Jorge Bollado scored the visitors' third, Delaval had little to offer and they now face a struggle to get out of the basement.
Shankhouse celebrated their first home win in the Northern Alliance Premier Division after beating Seaton Delaval 3-1.
Michael Bell and Mark Watson put Shankhouse on track before Paul Swithenbank scored a third before half-time from the spot after a handling offence by Delaval's Dean Taylor saw him red carded. Connal Reed replied for the visitors.
Seaton Delaval are lying fourth from bottom with 11 points from as many games.
