Fears over gangs in Holywell Dene
People in two areas of Northumberland have asked the county council for help amid fears over gangs of young people gathering in local parkland.
Dog walkers in the South Newsham Road area of Blyth say they feel unsafe and intimidated because of youths using a makeshift den in nearby woodland as a meeting place to drink alcohol.
And concerns were raised at Holywell Dene near Seaton Delaval about possible fire damage to a number of trees and the amount of litter left behind by youths who hang around there.
Their fears have been taken up by the council's safer communities unit, which has decided that enforcement action is not required at present.
Tony Moran, team leader for the area, said: "We didn't want to attack and push the problem onto the streets. We decided to engage with the youths and encourage them to enjoy public open spaces, but with conditions to remove their litter, no fires and to have general respect for the area and other users."
Arrangements have also been made for fire safety and safer communities unit staff to get the message out to young people at school assemblies.
