Seghill children going green
Children in Northumberland have been learning how to become more energy efficient.
Northumberland County Council teamed up with npower to work with almost 30 schools in the county in the initiative to create the next generation of 'climate cops'.
Seghill First School was one of the latest to take part in the project, which is part of npower's Greener Schools Programme.
Other schools that have also taken part in the project's academies include Abbeyfields County First School in Morpeth; Cambois First School in Cambois; Mowbray First School in Choppington and Newbrough CE First School in Hexham.
The npower Greener Schools programme also provides schools with green makeovers, which help to implement tailor-made energy efficiency measures and educate children on how to be greener.
Tracey Chappell, Seghill First School head teacher, said: "The Climate Cops Academy has taught the children about climate change and energy saving in a really fun, engaging way. They've learnt some simple ways to conserve energy that will make a big difference to the school, their homes and the environment."
Around 28 schools from the North East and almost 130 schools nationwide have been involved with the scheme to date.
Hugh Clear-Hill, senior environment policy officer at Northumberland County Council, said: "This is an important and timely issue, which is why we are supporting our schools to be not only good, improving and inclusive schools but also to become sustainable schools.
"It is the small things we can all do that add up to making a big difference, and we hope this programme will work with other schools in the county to help reduce overall the amount of energy used."
